The honest version: Previously, every workshop required a builder to use their own AWS account, potentially incurring unexpected charges or requiring setup friction. Now, anyone can experiment with a pre-provisioned AWS account for a set duration, making it easier to follow along with guides and learn practical skills without financial risk or account management overhead. This is particularly useful for short-term evaluations or training sessions.

The catch

The catch: While free, these sandboxes are strictly time-limited to 8 hours per instance and restricted to one per week per user, resetting each Sunday. Not all workshops are enabled for sandboxes at launch, and provisioning can take up to 15 minutes. This limits deep dives or multi-day projects within a single sandbox session. Pairs with: AWS CloudFormation for provisioning the workshop environment.

Ship it

If you are evaluating AWS services or training new engineers, direct them to the AWS Builder Center. Ensure they understand the 8-hour and weekly limits before starting a workshop to manage expectations and avoid interruptions. For more extensive testing, you will still need to provision a standard AWS account.
